18 contemporary American artists and 18 of their French counterparts
(from the foremost Parisian printmaking organization Le Trait) will exhibit
their prints and print derived artist’s books at 3 venues in New York City
and 3 in Paris during the fall months of 2005. Organized and curated by
Maddy Rosenberg in NY and Le Trait Association Committee in
exhibitions will highlight the role of the artist printmaker and the contrasts
between the American and the French approach to the medium. The artwork
spans printmaking from the traditional to the more unconventional, with
techniques ranging from intaglio, lithography, and silkscreen to photo and
digital processes, used individually and in combination, as paper prints as well
as on unusual surfaces. Several of the artists will be creating site specific
installations for all the exhibition spaces. These exhibitions consist of work
produced by artists who are passionate about making their own original prints
and have developed skills working directly in printmaking media. The work of
these artists is of the highest conceptual quality, involving technical and aesthetic
explorations of printmaking media from the most traditional to the current photo-
printmaking and digital trends, and into mixed media installations. Many of the
artists are also engaged in the creation of artist’s books and have been working
on the cutting edge of this art form as it gains a larger audience. The
celebration of printmaking. This project aims to make this into a similar event in
Specific workshops taught by exhibiting artists on such topics as monotype and
linocut, the concept of the artist’s book, the technique of chine collé, and exploring
digitalprintmaking will bring hands on understanding of many of the processes
exhibited. A symposium will be held on contemporary printmaking issues and
artists’ talks on the international collaborative projects. Other events include a
multi-media performance presentation by David Lantow and Todd Colby and a
film directed by Anura Idupuganti highlighting several of the artists
demonstrating their distinctive printmaking approaches.
